Installing updates
Applies to: Workspace Admins on a server with one organization (otherwise the IT Admin) · Time: a few minutes per update
Overview
New versions of Digital Workspace are installed from the browser, never by running the installer again. Before every update the database is backed up; if anything fails, the previous version comes back automatically.
See what is available
- Open Workspace settings → Updates.
- The label next to the title shows Up to date, Update available, Out of date or Required update.
- This server shows the version, the connection and whether the Updater service is Running. An online server checks for updates every hour; click Check now to check at once.
- Available updates lists newer versions with what changed. Each one is Optional, Recommended or Required by a date.
Install an update (online server)
- Next to the version, click Update now and confirm. The app is unavailable for a few minutes while it restarts.
- The progress bar shows Download, Verify, Back up, Install and Done. The page reconnects by itself.
- Check Update history: the update shows Installed.
Install an update (offline server)
- Your vendor sends two files: the release file (.release) and the update file (digital-workspace-<version>.run).
- Under Add an update from files, click 1. Choose release file and select the .release file.
- Click 2. Choose update file and select the .run file. Wait until it is uploaded and checked: Update file uploaded and verified.
- Click Update now next to the version and confirm.
Automatic updates
- Under Automatic updates, choose Off — install updates yourself, Required (security) updates only, or All updates.
- Choose the Maintenance window: the day and hour (server time) when automatic updates start. Pick a time when few people work.
- Click Save. Online servers download updates by themselves; offline servers install the update files you have uploaded.
Required updates
A required update must be installed by its date; a banner reminds every admin. If the date passes, settings changes and new users are blocked until a Workspace Admin installs it. Everything else keeps working.
Troubleshooting
| Message | Resolution |
|---|---|
| Updater service: Not running | The IT Admin User runs docker compose up -d updater in /opt/digital-workspace. |
| Failed — nothing changed | Open Log in Update history to see why, fix it (often disk space) and try again. |
| Failed — previous version restored | The server is back on the old version with your data. Send the log to your vendor. |
| Upload the update file to install this version. | The server is offline: add both files from your vendor under Add an update from files. |
| "already installed" when running the installer again | Install updates from Workspace settings › Updates instead. |
These articles are also in the Knowledge Base on your own server, after it is updated.
